Mr D Cooks the books: I found this book "Slow Cooked" the other day and it has a number of recipes that can be easily adapted for a thermal cooker and this Goulash recipe is just one.

  • 500g stewing steak or brisket, cubed
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely diced
  • 1 red pepper or 75g char-grilled red
  • peppers from a jar
  • 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 4 tsp smoked paprika, preferably sweet
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 400g tin plum tomatoes
  • 500ml hot beef stock or water
  • 150ml sour cream, to serve
  • 25g chopped fresh parsley, to serve
  • salt and pepper


  1. Put the meat in a suitable container (a food container or plastic bag) and season with salt and pepper. Add the flour and make sure the meat is covered by it. Leave to one side for later.
  2. Put the red pepper, tin of chopped tomatoes, smoked paprika, caraway seeds and cayenne pepper in a blender and blitz to a paste.
  3. Put the meat, onion, garlic, the paste and the plum tomatoes into the inner pot and mix.
  4. Pour in the beef stock and bring the inner pot to the boil.
  5. Put on the lid and keep it just on the boil for 5 minutes.
  6. Place the inner pot into the outer insulated container. Shut the lid and leave to slow cook without power for a minimum of 2 to 3 hours.
  7. When ready serve on a bed of rice with a good dollop of sour cream and a sprinkling of chopped parsley.
